Dean Stone--1954
Looking at this card, I am ready to
hand Dean Stone a Mr.
Congeniality Award or a Good
Neighbor Accomodation. He just
looks like a really, really great guy.

Stone pitched primarily for sub-.500
teams which resulted in a career 29-
39 mark in eight seasons. He
usually walked as many as a
fanned in a season. Plus, he
couldn't hit either, batting just .088
in 211 plate appearances.

However for one season he
competed well; winning 12 games
for the middle-of-the-road
Washington Senators of 1954 and
represented the team at the All-Star
Game.

Just 23, the lefty would enter the
Mid-Summer Classic with runners at
the corners and Dodger slugger
Duke Snider at the plate with two
outs in the eighth inning and the
score tied. Stone would get the final
out of the inning when the
Cardinals Red Schoendienst was
thrown out attempting to steal home.

Lifted in favor of a pinch-hitter and
replaced by Detroit's Virgil Trucks
in the ninth inning after the
American League scored three
runs; Stone would grab an All-Star
victory without retiring a batter.

Great job Dean... you're a heck of a
guy.
