Dave Adlesh--1969
Don't you just love the look on Dave
Adlesh's face on this card??? It's like
he's telling us, "I see you over there."
However, one has to wonder what is
distracting him during his Topps photo
shoot moment.
Were his teammates giving him the
business? Was he looking cool for some
gal? Or was he just too bored with the
hole picture-taking process?
It will just have to remain one of life's
small mysteries.
What wasn't a mystery, was his inability
to hit, as National League hurlers easily
figured out how to pitch to Adlesh.
With just 43 hits, 18 walks and twice
being hit by pitches, Dave Adlesh had a
hard time getting on a base during his
106 career big league games. However,
the catcher didn’t have a problem
striking out, as Adlesh fanned 80 times
to give him a career 1.270 K/OB ratio---
which is one of the worst in major league
history amongst position players.
A defensive-minded catcher, Adlesh was
at his best for the Astros on
June 18, 1967 when he caught the first
of Don Wilson two no-hitters. Naturally
Adlesh was hitless in the game, fanning
twice in three plate appearances.
Editor’s Note: Adlesh would hit just .
168 with one long ball (off Philadelphia’s
John Boozer) in 256 big league at bats
scattered over six seasons with the
Astros. Following the ’68 season, Adlesh
would be dealt to the Cardinals, though
he would never return to the big league
diamonds.
