Daryl Boston---1989
Clutching his bat with a gaze towards
an unfulfilled career with the Pale
Hose, Boston was too cool to stand
up and pose for his 1989 Topps card.

A first round pick of the White Sox in
1981 out of Cincinnati’s Woodward
High School, the sleek Boston never
realized the full potential of his
projected ability. After arriving in the
big leagues in 1984, the lefty-
swinging Boston struggled versus
southpaws and was relegated to part-
time status during his five-season run
with the Sox, hitting just .239 for
Chicago.

Plucked off the waivers by the Mets
in April 1990, Boston enjoyed his
most significant playing time with New
York. Moving between the three
outfield posts for five different New
York managers, Boston played
between 115 and 137 games during
his three Big Apple seasons.

So, when a New York batter was
plunked earlier this season, the Mets
announcers naturally recounted
Daryl Boston’s walk-off hit-by-pitch
moment from April 23, 1992.

As the Mets were mired in a
scoreless dual with the Cardinals,
Boston entered the game as a pinch-
hitter in the 11th inning, only to add
to the struggle with a ground out to
first baseman Pedro Guerrero off of
Cris Carpenter.

Fast forward to the 13th inning and
Boston found himself facing soft-
tossing left-hander Juan Agosto with
the bases loaded and one out.
Agosto, a former White Sox
teammate from the early 1980s, hit
Boston with a pitch that lodged in his
jersey. The Mets announcers
recalled that Boston calmly reached
in and pulled the ball out of his
jersey, only to drop in on home plate
before trotting off to first base. Game
over, 1-0 in one wild historic walk-off
victory for the Metropolitans!

Like Cool Hand Luke downing the 50
hard boiled eggs, Boston was one
cool dude.

Just look at his card.
