Darold Knowles--1974
As the 2011 World Series begins, we
remember back to the Oakland A's of the
1970s and Darold Knowles.

Knowles would meander through eight
organizations with a career that began in
the 1960s and lasted into a third decade.
A reliever by trade, Knowles would make
his make his mark in baseball history by
pitching in each game of the 1973 World
Series.

Oakland manager Dick Williams would
raise his left arm signaling for Knowles
daily as the lefty responded with 6-1/3
scoreless innings. Knowles would log two
Series saves, registering the final out of
Game 7 when he induced Mets Wayne
Garrett to pop out to shortstop Bert
Campaneris.

Knowles would stand in line behind
Reggie Jackson who would claim Series
MVP honors for the World Champion A's.

Surprisingly, despite his World Series
perfection in '73, Knowles' 1974 card
failed to list his accomplishment from the
previous Fall Classic.

Instead, Topps would highlight the
southpaw's amazing 32 strikeouts in a 13-
inning game as an amateur and his
Northern League accomplishments of
1961.

They would also note in cartoon,
Knowles losing efforts during a no-hitter
while in the minors. The no-no would
have a lasting impression on Knowles as
noted in a July 1966 article in
Baseball
Digest
:

"I've always struck guys out, but I
began to learn something about this
game from the no-hitter I lost in the
minors," said Knowles. "I walked nine
batters, and Fred Newman (Angels)
beat me 3-0, and the manager ripped
me for it."

Knowles would finish his 16-year career
with a 66-74, 3.12 mark with 143 saves...
one World Series record.
