Dan Coombs--1969
Each year players strike one of a dozen
of poses for their card. Catchers usually
squat, fielders bend over flashing their
leather and hitters raise their bats and
stare into the lens or will turn to the
camera in a bunting pose.

Meanwhile pitchers can immortalize
themselves on cardboard in an array of
poses. Some turn sideways to take the
stretch position, while others reach out to
the camera after simulating a pitch.
There is also the ever popular ball in the
glove as they stare in to take a sign from
the catcher.

As for Dan Coombs; he chose the "make
me look like the Jolly Green Giant."

Rising 6'4" the pitcher, who also graced
the basketball court at Seton Hall, looks
like a giant... and a nerdy giant at that,
given his glasses. He was hardly an
imposing sight to batters, as the
right-hander allowed more hits than
innings pitched during his career.

One of a handful of hurlers to have been
born in Maine, Coombs managed to last
nine years in the bigs. The pride of
Brewer, ME enjoyed his finest season a
year after this card came out, as
Coombs posted 10 wins and an
impressive 3.30 ERA for the hapless
Padres of 1970.

He would go 19-27, 4.03 in 144 big
league appearances for the Astros and
Padres before walking off the mound and
probably up his beanstalk.
