Dale Berra---1985
Like father, like son?
Of all the sons who followed in the
footsteps of their Hall of Fame
fathers, Dale Berra logged the most
of games played during a career.
Yogi’s son was the Pirates first-round
pick in 1975 and he rewarded them
with a weak bat, limited range at
shortstop and a role in the cocaine
scandal the rocked baseball and the
Pittsburgh clubhouse in the late
1970s.
Dale hit just .236 in 11 years in the
bigs, eight seasons with the Pirates.
Yogi blasted 385 homers to go with a
.285 career average over 19
seasons en route to a date with the
Hall of Fame. So much drafting
players based on the gene pool.
Naturally throughout Dale's career,
there would be comparisons to his
father. In defense of himself, Dale
was quoted in 1982 as saying:
“You can't compare me to my
father. Our similarities are
different.”
Huh?
They say the apple usually doesn’t
fall far from the tree, and as Dale did
play in the major leagues, this can be
somewhat true. However, we think
Dale’s apple had a worm in it.
