Clete Boyer--1969
The youngest of the big league
Boyer Brothers, Clete looks more like
a frightened kid in his 1969 card than
a major leaguer. It is almost as if he
were playing catch in the backyard
with Ken and Cloyd as they whipped
the ball at their kid brother yelling,
“You’re never gonna get to the big
leagues being a sissy.”
And while you couldn’t tell it from this
card, Clete was a virtual vacuum at
third base. Signed by the Kansas
City A’s as a "bonus baby" and
shipped to the Yankees in a 13-
player trade in 1957, Boyer was a
nice piece of the Bronx Bombers
World Series teams of the early
1960s. Annually hitting around .250
with 10 or so long balls; the third
sacker routinely battled Baltimore’s
Brooks Robinson for Gold Glove
status.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t until 1969 that
Boyer finally landed his golden
hardware… and it's our guess the
voters didn’t catch a peek at his ’69
card before casting their ballot.
