On This Date in Major League
Baseball History... May 25, 1919
Having spent the first six years of his 14-
year playing career with the Brooklyn
Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirate outfielder
Casey Stengel delighted the Brooklyn
crowd on this date, May 25, 1919.
A soft-hitting fly chaser with the Pirates in
1919, Stengel doffed his cap to the
Brooklyn crowd in response to friendly
applause and released a sparrow that
was hidden under his cap.
Vintage Casey.
“The Old Professor” would go on to a
Hall of Fame career as a manager after
hitting .284 with 60 homers in 1,277
games for the Dodgers, Pirates and
Giants from 1912-1925.
Editor’s Note: Favorite Stengel quote:
"Being with a woman all night never
hurt no professional baseball player.
It's staying up all night looking for a
woman that does him in."
