Carl Warwick--1966
When I looked at a smiling Carl Warwick
on his 1966 (and final) card, I really
didn't know the player, but I thought I had
seen him before. I know one thing, he
sure looked happy to be on the card.

Looking at the statistics of his career---
the fingerprint of Carl Warwick's baseball
life--- he played sparingly for four
organizations, but started for just one---
the Houston  Colt .45's.

Traded early in the 1962 season by the
St. Louis Cardinals to the expansion Colt
.45's, Warwick would hit .257-23-107 in
280 games for Houston in two years.
Good enough for a team that would lose
192 games in their first two seasons, yet
hardly worthy of starting time on a
pennant contender.

From time to time on my reports, I will
use the phrase, "Backup player on a
winning club, starter on a second division
club." It is a phrase that defines a player
who can play at the major league level,
however, he really only plays on a bad
club. It is a phrase that defines Carl
Warwick.

Editor's Note: We don't know what Carl
did after his playing career, though we
think he went to Hollywood, changed his
name to Richard Burgi and went on to
star in "Desperate Housewives."
