Carl Scheib--1954
The month of June has brought us
another round of interleague play, which
always brings to focus the American
League's dilemma of what to do with their
designated hitters in National League
parks and how their pitchers can't hit.

Which brings us to Carl Scheib, who
when looking at the numbers was a
better hitter than pitcher. Granted he
wasn't the next Babe Ruth, but the lanky
right-hander hit a very respectable .250
over 468 at-bats spread over 11
seasons. He even posted a nice .338
SLG courtesy of rapping out six triples
and five homers.

Unfortunately Scheib went 45-65, 4.88
for the Philadelphia A's and St. Louis
Cardinals during the 1940s and '50s.

The youngest player to ever to appear in
the American League, Scheib's
wonderful  story of walking off the farm to
professional ball is captured by the folks
at SABR :

Editor's Note: Looks like Scheib was
getting ready to throw a 2-seam fastball
here... maybe he should have gone with
the curveball.
