Cap Peterson--1968
You never hear much about the
trade, but in retrospect, it had to
have been one of the worst in
baseball history.
During five poor seasons with the
Giants during the early-1960s, Cap
Peterson hit just .235 with seven long
balls as he caddied for Willie
McCovey, the Alou Brothers and
Willie Mays in the San Francisco tall
grasses.
Yet, somehow the Giants convinced
the lowly Senators to take a chance
on the former Bonus Baby who was
shipped along with journeyman
reliever Bob Priddy for lefty Mike
McCormick in December of 1966.
Peterson responded to the change of
scenery by hitting a lowly .240 with
eight homers in a career-high 122
games in 1967. Priddy went 3-7, with
four saves and a very respectable
3.44 ERA.
On the other side of the deal, the
return of McCormick to the Giants
netted the lefty a 22-10, 2.85 mark
and the '67 National League Cy
Young Award.
Advantage San Francisco.
Nope, they don't talk much about the
Peterson-Priddy for McCormick deal
in Washington D.C. Not now. Not
ever.
Editor's Note: Peterson's full name,
Charles Andrew Peterson, hence
"Cap".... nice nickname Charles.
