Buster Narum--1966
A right-hander with a good sinker, Buster
Narum fashioned a 14-27, 4.45 record in
96 big league outings primarily with the
pitiful Washington Senators of the
mid-1960s.
Undistinguished on the mound, Narum
surprisingly made a name for himself with
the lumber. With a .059 career batting
average in 118 at-bats courtesy of seven
hits, Narum made the most of his contact
by blasting three home runs. He gained
notoriety with Baltimore, when he
became the first-ever Oriole to connect
on a big fly in his first major league
at-bat (Lou Montanez would duplicate
the feat in 2008).
Limited to seven outings with Baltimore in
1963, Narum would be shuttled to the
Senators for 20-year-old rookie Lou
Piniella in 1964.
Following his first home run off Boston's
Don Mossi; Narum would also go deep
against Earl Wilson and Jim Bouton while
with the Senators.
And yes, with a given name of Leslie
Ferdinand Narum, it was just easier to
call him Buster.
