Bob Owchinko--1983
A collegiate star at Eastern Michigan
University, Bob Owchinko would be a first
round pick (5th overall) of the Padres in
the 1976 Draft. However, not even he
could save the Padres of the 1970's.

With over 100 loses in four of their first
six seasons the Padres struggled during
their early years.

Owchinko would be rushed to the big
leagues in '76 after making 13 Double-A
starts, as he would go 0-2 with a 16.82 in
two starts for San Diego. As a part of
their rotation 90-loss seasons still
prevailed.

Overall Owchinko would go 37-60, 4.28
over 10 seasons. Some seasons were
good, others were poor as Owchinko's
performance varied from year-to-year.
The southpaw would fare a little better
working out of the pen, logging a nice
3.20 with two saves in 1981 for Oakland.

Here he is on his 1983 cardboard,
smiling and gazing out at the camera with
bright eyes and looking forward to a
good season. Unfortunately '83 was not
kind to Owchinko as he spent most of the
campaign in the minors for the Pirates
after being released by Oakland out of
Spring Training.

For Pittsburgh Owchinko would face just
two batters, both lefty swingers for St.
Louis, as Andy Van Slyke homered and
Darrell Porter doubled. It would give him
an infinite ERA for the 1983 campaign.

However, Owchinko would land a job in
1984 with Cincinnati and the Expos in
1986, proving that there is life after an
infinite ERA, especially if you are
left-handed.

Editor's Note: Owchinko is one of the
January 1st birthday's... Happy B-day
Lefty.
