Bob Lacey--1980
The A’s closer for 1980, Bob Lacey was
as busy as the Maytag Man. With a
whopping six saves, yes six, Lacey led
the Oakland bullpen in saving games
that season. Of course, with manager
Billy Martin kicking back in the dugout
and watching the starting staff of Rick
Langford, Mike Norris, Matt Keogh, Steve
McCatty and Brian Kingman hurl 93
complete games--- there wasn’t much
work to be found as a reliever.

With the A’s firmly entrenched in second
place 13-1/2 games behind the Royals,
Martin handed Lacey a start on the
second to the last day of the ’80
campaign. The lefty would proceed to
enjoy the greatest irony as he tossed a
shutout at the Milwaukee Brewers,
fanning five while scattering seven hits in
collecting his lone career complete game.

Editor’s Note: Lacey would go 20-29,
3.67 in 284 outings for the A’s, Indians,
Rangers, Angels and Giants covering
seven big league seasons. His 74
appearances in 1978 would lead the
American League that season.
