After signing with the Giants as a $150,000 Bonus Baby and heading directly to the big leagues in 1962; Bob Garibaldi finally made it to cardboard by 1970. Yet, after nine years in pro ball which included 15 games in the big leagues all Topps could talk about was
Garbaldi's collegiate heroics at the University of Santa Clara.
Behind the strong arm of Garibaldi and a group of four other future big leaguers (Tim Cullen, John Boccabella, Ernie Fazio & Pete Magrini), the Santa Clara Nine came within a game of winning the College World Series in '62. Garibaldi would set two CWS records and claim the MVP honors for the tournament.
However, once in the proball Garbaldi never did capture the magic that made him a hero in Omaha. In the minors he logged a respectable 96-81, 3.79 mark hurling exclusively at Triple-A.
He would appear in cardboard for Topps both in 1970 and '71 without pitching in the bigs in either season. By 1972, his career was over as Girabaldi wound up being the last $100,000 Bonus Baby never to win a game in the majors.
