Bob Feller--1953
Now that the Red Sox and Yankees
have officially opened the 2010
season on Sunday evening, it is
time to turn back the clock and
remember when baseball threw
their first pitch during daylight. In
the long history of Major League
Baseball, there has only been one
no-hitter on Opening Day. And we
can thank Bob Feller for that feat.

It was April 16, 1940 and the 21-
year-old Cleveland hurler disposed
of the hometown Chicago White
Sox, 1-0 in front of 14,000 fans.
Feller would finish the ’40 campaign
with a 27-11, 2.61 mark while the
Tribe finished in second place, one
game behind the Detroit Tigers.

While many words have been
written about “Rapid Robert” and
his Hall of Fame career, we are not
going to type much more here,
except to direct you to
The
Cleveland Plain Dealer
, who over
the weekend reprinted the article
and pages from their paper that
day.

Feller Opening Day No-Hitter in
Cleveland Plain Dealer

Editor's Note: I love the writing from
the past; the style and the
descriptive manner. Also, note the
small piece, third column towards
the bottom:  "Dies As He Digs
Grave"... poor guy.
