Bob Chandler--1973
One can only guess as to what Bob
Chandler was thinking during his
football card photo moment of 1973.
Is the former Southern Cal receiver
wondering if it is going to snow in
Buffalo come September? Could he
be recounting his steps trying to
recall where he left his playbook on
his Maid of Mist tour at Niagara Falls
the previous weekend? Or maybe he
is just sweating out the moment with
a bad case of indigestion from having
one to many wings the night before
at the Anchor Bar.

Whatever the case may be, Chandler
enjoyed a good run in Buffalo during
the 1970s. Reunited with Trojan
teammate O.J. Simpson, Chandler
led the Bills in receiving four
separate times, scored 48
touchdowns during his 12-year NFL
career and basically made the ladies
of Western New York swoon with his
good looks. Known as “Bobby” to the
Buffaloians, Chandler would enjoy his
best season in 1976 with 61
receptions and 10 TDs, as the Bills
suffered through one of their worst
seasons in history at 2-12.

Chandler would eventually taste the
sweetness of success with the
Oakland Raiders, as he joined the
Black and Silver in 1980 during their
Super Bowl XV Championship under
Tom Flores.

Following his 12-year NFL career,
Chandler combined his good looks
and football knowledge to work in
television as a commentator for NBC
and the Raiders; while also playing
himself in two cameo roles on the
silver screen.

Digging deeper, we discover that
Chandler passed away in 1995 at
age 45, a victim of lung cancer. The
Bob Chandler Foundation
established in his honor helps
channel money to fighting cancer,
while recognizing excellence in
athletes with a scholarship fund.

Then again, maybe Chandler was
deep in thought as he contemplated
life and how fleeting it can be...
