Bob Aspromonte--1970
On This Date in Baseball History,
September 18, 1962...

I remember having this card, sans the
autograph, of Bob Aspromonte and his
bat. Laying against his shoulder like a
trusted friend, the lumber eluded the
third sacker in 1970 as Aspromonte hit .
213 with his career winding down.

He really should have been
photographed with his leather; as
Aspromonte was known as a solid glove
man at the hot corner.

Twice, Aspromonte led third basemen in
fielding during his career (1961 & 1971),
yet he never collected a Gold Glove. In
fact, on this date, September 18, 1962,
while with the Houston Colt .45's
Aspromonte set a National League
record for third basemen when he
logged his 57th consecutive game
without committing an error. However, he
would commit 13 errors during the '62
campaign, losing out on Gold Glove
honors to San Francisco's Jim
Davenport, who supplanted Ken Boyer
as a the fielding standard for third
basemen in '62.

All totalled, Aspromonte would play 13
years in the bigs, with a respectable .252
batting average, though on this date we
will remember his glove work.

Editor's Note: This autographed card
was featured on Amazon.com on sale for
$44.95. I think I will pass and look for my
old card instead.
