Paul Blair/Dave Johnson ---1965
While the 1965 Rookie Stars card of Paul Blair and Dave Johnson sells for just a few
dollars, it should be a more valuable card. Why? Well, Topps actually got one right!
The card company came out with the Rookie Star cards during the 1960s, but for the
most part were as accurate as a weatherman from Buffalo during the winter. “We think it’
s going to snow. Somewhere between 1-inch and 3-feet of white stuff is expected--- and
that’s the best I can do Buffalo .”
But for Topps, they nailed it.
Blair enjoyed a 17-year career, 13 years with the Orioles, during which he won eight
Gold Gloves, made two All-Star game appearances and headed to the playoffs eight
times.
Meanwhile, Johnson had a 13-year career in which he garnered four All-Star selections,
won three Gold Gloves and made five trips to the post-season. While with Atlanta in
1973, Johnson must have swung a Roy Hobbs model bat that he found in the corner of
the Louisville Slugger Factory Storeroom; as he blasted 42 big flies as a second
baseman--- tying Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby for the major league home run season-
record for second sackers.
“And in San Diego, the weather is sunny, 85 degrees and a beautiful day.”
