Bill Greif---1974
After suffering through a rain-soaked
evening in Detroit, where the damp
air that sent shivers down my body
added to the discomfort of watching
the titanic struggle of the Tigers-
Oakland 14-8 debacle--- I am having
a Bill Greif kind of day.
Difficulty in setting up the Internet on
my computer has resulted in this
tardy post. The mistake of not
wearing glasses in the concierge
lounge turned my onion bagel into a
blueberry bagel. And while I could
use the antioxidants in my life, I am
not into “fruiting” my bagels. To add
to the misery, my Brewers lost a
game in the Wild Card chase after
blowing a two-run lead to the Reds
last night. It happens, but when you
are in a job where your security is
dictated by wins and losses; the
tough “L’s” in September are hard to
accept.
However, I can always look at this
1974 card of Bill Greif and find a
measure of solace.
After all, when this card came out
Greif was suffering through a 9-19
season with the 102-loss, last place
Padres. He would lead the NL in hit
batsmen (14) and finish second in
the league in losses to teammate
Randy Jones, Chicago’s Bill Bonham
and Montreal’s Steve Rogers who all
suffered 22 setbacks. He had to
endure an turbulent off-season of
franchise uncertainty, as Topps had
the some of the Padres ready to
move to Washington, D.C. in their
cards. And lastly Greif (and the
Padres) had to wear those God-awful
yellow uniforms, which were
grotesque by themselves and an
abomination to all of baseball when
seen as a group of nine on the field.
Maybe life isn’t so bad…
