But we guess the question is, did the Topps photographer say, "sneer for the camera" when he clicked away in front of John Mayberry and Bob Watkins?
Talk about two mug shots... geez.
Watkins would have an unfulfilled big league career that lasted 15 innings where the right-hander walked (13) more hitters than he fanned (11).
The young Mayberry would become expendable when the Astros picked up veteran first sacker Lee May on November 29, 1971 in the mega-deal that saw Joe Morgan head to the Reds. Mayberry was traded to the Royals on December 2, 1971.
Inserted at first base for Kansas City the next year Mayberry flourished, hitting 20 or more home runs in eight of the next nine seasons.
He would accumulate 255 homers and a . 253 average in 15 seasons that saw Mayberry line up alongside the American League All-Stars twice during his career.
Mayberry would eventually be found smiling on many cards throughout the 1970's...
Editor's Note: We find it interesting that the Topps photographer chose to shoot mug shots against a brick wall when with the Astros as we noted in the Leon McFadden cards...
